Nostalgic For CDs

I was recently thinking about writing a new piece for an ensemble and wanted to listen to this piece by Nico Muhly called ‘Seeing Is Believing’, which he recoded with the Aurora orchestra, it’s a fantastic recording by the way. I remember becoming somewhat obsessed with it as a teenager and buying the CD…see below.

When I was growing up my parents had a CD player, it was one of the Sony one’s that looked a bit like a space -ship. I would put this CD, or any other one I had bought, plug head phones in, and listen.

I realised I no longer have a CD player.

I went onto the Aurora Orchestra’s website and went to an archived post about this recording ‘Seeing Is Believing’ and it had a link to a Spotify playlist of this album. I thought I would resign myself to listening to it on spotify, as that’s the only streaming service I subscribe to, however the album had been taken down and was no longer available. It’s only available on apple music and amazon it seemed.

What happened next was strange and unexpected, but I sort of mourned the CD. I think perhaps because it had meant a lot to me at the time when I first listened to it I was perhaps also tapping into a memory, but I found myself oddly emotional about the whole thing.

If anyone has a cd player they don’t want, please donate it to me as it will cheer me up infinitely.
